im sure everyone here knows the answer except me... what if im watching a movie encoded in either 5.1 format, and have the right corresponding decoder receiver... but i only have 4 speakers (the center channel and sub ports are left empty) would i miss any text that comes out of center channel if i left it on the 5.1? would i have to downmix it to stereo or what?

In your receiver's speaker setup menu, set the center and sub woofer to 'none' or 'no'.
The sound from the center and the 'low frequency effect 'will be send to the front main speakers.
Just make sure that you are using big speakers for the front and set them to 'large' .
No need to down mix to stereo, you an still play DTS and DD 5.1.
Good luck
