Hi there I just got my crown xls 602 D amp. I'm wondering if this amp is enough to power the electro voice zx4 speakers? If not which speakers could I use for the amp. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

At 380 watts/channel, how loud do you need it to go?

The road to volume is sensitive speakers, good DJ stuff is over 100db

The ZX4s (according to the website) are 100 db.

100 db + 380 watts turned to 11 = loud.

Oh my God, 100db speakers and 380w. More likely people will end up catching drive units in their hands...and be deaf just before that...

Please remember that the pain threshold is generally reckoned on 116db. If your speakers are 100db efficient that's achieved with just 1 watt of power! Ok you'd have to be just 1m away from the speakers, but even at 2m that's still 97db or so (spoken conversation is 82db or so). You won't need too much power to fill a decent sized hall.

Anything can be loud. What you need to be concerned with is the volume of air you are trying to affect. Sensitivity is very important for a PA/DJ system but equally so how much air volume the speakers are capable of impacting. If it's a larger venue then obviously the larger the drivers the better in s which case power also beomes an issue due to the amplifiesrs need to be able to control the excursion of the speaker. Since most PA speakers use some kind of horn configuration for mids and highs, then I'm obviously referring to the low end drivers. This is where current and Damping factors come into play. I think the crown will probably do just fine. If you go to larger speakers or using another bass cabinet then you might consider bridging it getting another one and going to a mono amp setup. I would run equipment designed for the average size venue you intend to do business in. If you need something more for a larger setting, then you can rent some equipment to cover your needs, until you are up and running and can invest in multiple systems.
let me know if I can help with anything further.
Paul

Frank, you're confusing the net results of doubling (or halving) the electrical power into an ideal loudspeaker with the end result on acoustic power of doubling (or halving) the distance from the ideal loudspeaker.

While doubling the wattage into the ideal load represents a mere +3dB average increase when you double the distance away from the speaker the result is a -6dB lowering of acoustic power. This is frequency dependent as our hearing changes its sensitivity to frequency as SPL rises/drops and represents only the on paper spec that wouldn't hold true in a real world live room where reverberation (room add) confuses such figures.

However, with a -6db loss for every doubling of distance it doesn't take much room size to require substantial output levels. Someone sitting approximately 9' or 3 meters (the intial one meter plus a doubling of that distance) away from their 89dB (@ 1 meter) sensitivity speaker will have lowered the nominal SPL to 83dB @ 1 watt. On paper a 23' distance will have resulted in a lost 12db+ from a speaker at one end to the listener at the other. That's equivalent to taking an 89dB speaker down to a piddling 77dB on axis or a 100dB @ 1 meter speaker down to the equivalent 88dB system. Consider the distance away from the loudspeaker in most PA applications and think about starting at the disadvantage of using an 88dB speaker.

That all calculates out to watts being very important and the highest sensitivity being desired if the dynamic range is averaged out to +20dB and we're now expecting as much as 120dB peak output from our speaker at a mere 1 meter distance.

If the listener is 9' away from a pair of 89dB speakers, the second speaker reproducing the same program material results in a net addition of +6dB for the pair in room (therefore the +6dB on paper add for dipoles over monopoles). Real world figures are lower in real world rooms but those would be the on paper specs for distance and additional speakers. Linkwitz states the additional acoustic output of dipoles as a generic 4.8dB in room with no frequency information provided and measured in the near field.

Sorry for the Minnesota PDF, it was the easiest to find with the calculation in print;

yes horrible tax payer financed programs like the MILITARY, the POLICE and anything else a selfish society won't do for themselves, like, oh I dont know, LONG TERM CARE when we get old or DISASTER RELIEF. Give it a break...all things are better in moderation, especially capitalism run-a-muck.
Lets keep it to things you know something about...like Audio
