iTunes provides a command to convert mp3 files to Apple Lossless.
It seems, depending on file type, one's choices are limited.
Under preferences, one can choose one of 5 format protocols to import music.
These are:
AIFF
Apple Lossless
MP3
AAC
WAV
I've read elsewhere on this forum that Lossless is preferred.
I stream iTunes via Airport Express to my home system.
Just picked up a 1 TB portable HD to store all the music on.
Transferring iTunes to the portable HD was seamless.
Am I missing something here?
Does not mp3 compress the music, hence the smaller file size?
I would think that the data lost during the compression is just that, lost.
So how can converting to lossless format recover that lost information, or is that happening.
Converting is a breeze, and so very much quicker than burning the entire CD to whatever format.
What's my best option here?
Or .. would a music server attached to the home system provide the best option for storage of all this music? |

I Import using Apple Lossless.
I convert them to MP3.
Pointless to go the other way.
Than, I make multiple, matching playlists, one of the Lossless for home use, the MP3s go to portable stuff...Ipod or 'Touch.
Now, what kind of link from the Airport to your Stereo? Analogue or Optical? |
