Is there any noticeable difference in sound quality when running optical cable vs. 3x 3.5mm stereo(5.1) , when playing an average 320 kbps stereo tune?

My setup consists of two full-range Sony SS-B3000 bookshelf speaker for music consumption combined with Logitech z-5500 center back and sub for movies.

I personnaly hear less distortion/crackling when running at higher volumes which i am sure of,
and a more complete/fuller sound in general but it might be placebo...?

thanks for your opinions
