I figured since Yamaha receivers are probably developed using their in-house speaker line, conventional thinking would lead you to believe that their receivers would sound the best with Yamaha speakers. Is my thinking conventional or flawed???

You could do far better than the Yamaha speakers.
Speakers to consider at a comparable price:
Axiom Audio (www.axiomaudio.com) Maybe a system based around the M22ti
Ascend Acoustics (www.ascendacoustics.com) not the most visually impressive, but amazingly good speakers.
Paradigm Studio Reference speakers (www.paradigm.com) Starting to get up in price but the Studio 20s are still very good.
B&W (whatever you can afford)

With a Yamaha 1400 the best match price-wise would be the Paradigm Monitor Series.[at least in my area]. A system of the 7's,cc370 and Mini-Monitor's has always been a favorite of mine and a very good match with the new Yamaha 1400 and 2400.
