Our friend Nuck moved into his house today and has his Lings with his near field listening set up. He has a ton of work going on there right now demoing stuff (construction term, not audio term) and electrical and what have you.
So he is off line for a few days. As some of the regulars here know he has been using shared space for the past few months fitting his gear in where he could and selling what he could not fit in.
I would like this thread to be a "House Warming" of sorts for him when he logs back in again.

Mike, and everyone, thank you very much!
I may have net service soon, and i will have pics.
Suffice to say that the gear is all put away in a clean room, as the rest of the place is now empty of interior walls, flooring and pretty much a wreck.
Total now is 12 X 24 open space, for living and kitchen space. It is a blast, but a lot of work on my only vacation week of the year!
I have good help, the dumpster is full and can go away tomorrow morning, new materials are on site.
The friend who is working aft/eve with me is going to cutout for boxes today, I am pulling the 3 new circuits then.
A seperate 50amp box is to be mounted for these, and a seperate ground spike will be driven, albeit after the ground thaws. At the present rate, that could be July!
Thank you all again, a pleasant surprise to see this thread!!!

The wiring inthe place is acceptble, 100amp breaker panel, and room for the add on smashplate to mount another 50 amp breaker panel. The box cutouts are fine in most of the house, but i think I will use surfacemount boxes for the stereo circuits. I can pull cable from a loom in the basement to move them around, and decent looking ones can be had for 20$. The y wont be visible to normal people, which means y'all will look when you visit.
Pre approval for the wirin is done by an electrician fiend, so I can install whenever I can.
The 'carpet first' thing comes to mind.
The timeframe is expanding, the budget is stretched, and all is in turmoil.

I spent 2 years living with 3 single guys, 4 years in undergrad housing, and 2 years in grad school. Ah, the good old days. What the places looked like, where they were, and how neat and clean they were certainly weren't the highlights.
It'll seem like its taking forever. After its all said and done, it'll seem like it went pretty quickly. |

The front door will not be used, and will be covere by curtains. Matching curtains on the other side, leaving just enough space for the screen(42").
The kit will be underneath the screen, but no yet sure of the configuration.
The PSB and sub HAVE to go, just standmounts for this space, abd I am chasing them around now...gee I wonder which standmounts that don't want a sub??? |

This weekend will be a heavy one, I have to rewire the whole place, my guys cut in the boxes, now I pull and land the wiring.
I am still considering a Jockey box with a 50amp for the kit, and I may just do so tomorrow.

Art sold his (Rainmaker's) and probably won't buy Totem again. Nice speakers but not really my type. I hope I have good sense enough not to upgrade until I can afford Devore Fidelity speakers...head and shoulders better than Totem IMO. |

David, the Classe house sound is broken into 2 types, as a matter of fact.
The earlier Dave Reich designs had their own slightly warm and 'tubish' effect, which is displayed quite well with the DR5 preamp that I have(with phono), which is a very solid and rich unit, fully balanced, of course.
he next gen (which is mine) came after DR, and was driven for a short while by a weenie guy, the one who pushed the CAP151 integrated, which is the low point for their products, IMO. Harsh, uncool and just loud. No phono without jumping through hoops.
The C-series is the start of the really good stuff, albeit without the smooth phono which never returnrd, installed or not.
Every componant that Classe does is transformer balanced and matched in impedence and volume to the next, that has never wavered.
In the preamp section, things tend to be pretty linear, from the CP30 through the CP60 pre's.
Each one uses dual(or more) power supplies, eschewing the need for external units, ala Naim, etc. Every unit is electrically and thermally seperate from the next unit, often in far corners, like the intersection of Chinatown and Greekville.
The Classe sound overall?
Hmm...As smooth and subtle at low power as a good set of tubes, likely sounding a little closer to the EL84 tube amp that I have than another set, like KT88's, and heres why.
A small tube amp at 3w delivers the way it is supposed to, but you know there is a close limit.
A big heavy tube amp lets its nuts show, unshaven, and is a badass, but might not have the finesse to date the prom queen.
The Classe amps, and indeed, the whole combo, can do it all. You can listen to a Verde or Mozart with Momma, hen turn it around and go whole hog with Van Halen, it doesnt matter.
As pure Class 'A' amps go, these units are fearless and will dim the lights as well as my wits. The straight power is endless, full of nuts and ready to go.
But turn it down and have a Scotch with Johnny Cash, and the romance is still there. The sound does not change, does not switch gears and does not ever let me down, the kit covers everything equally well.
Tubes on steroids? Maybe. |

I don't want to crush your hopes but are you sure you have space enough for things like Mani-2s in that room? Mine are 2 feet from the back wall of my 13'6 by 11' room firing lengthwise and I have too much bass already. Also, you might want to consider speakers designed to go near the rear wall in order to gain as much space as possible. Spendor SA-1s are, by all reports, fabulous and designed like this - as are Naim's speakers. |

The room is very open and 24' long, albeit with a small kitchen at the far end.
I can place the listening chair in the kitch and just room treatments from there.
If I uy at the right price(steep) I should be able to recoup if it doesnt work out.
I will look into Splendor dealers as well.

The cables look like a very short run, possibly negating need for a very heavy cable? This line also makes a ton of sense as to why they were used -
Speaker cables were from Gallo -- a twisted pair of the same wire used inside the speakers.
Good call with the missing sub amp. The woofer is new and I'm wondering if he's getting away from the sub amp.
Sorry to distract the conversation. Thiings look like they're starting to come together.

well, got the place cleaned up enough to place the big dog into the room.

BTW I did call Gallo yesterday about getting some of their twisted pair wire.
No go.
They did tell me that it is solid core 18 gauge with run of the mill insulation. They get it in bulk from China.
They suggested I try Lowe's or Home Depot for it. They said that is were most of their engineers go for stuff that is in the design process. |

Mike, much to my chagrin, the MA's did not make it out of the LZ.
The TW's are in storage, new tweeters still in box with them, I will have my electronics bench setup in time, I will revive them.
I missed on the stands(dammit) but the guy with the speakers will watch for me in the next 2 weeks till I get back.

Of note..the seller suggested that I research the power requirements of the Totems.
I replied that I had a kind of idea, and the ca300 amp was in use.
He looked up the specs real quick and thought that the amp might not be just the right thing.
I assured him that the amp has power, slew and is very square and fast.
He suggested that something like his 100w Blue Circle amp would work better.
I suggested that he give his head a shake, hehe.
After the dust settles, I may yet add another ca300 to the mix, but no hurry there, I need to build a rock solid wall shelf for the table first.

The mani-2's are finally home!
Present placement is horrid, psb towers as stands, just plunked away from immediate corners, 15" too high and no foundation to speak of.
These are going to be fantastic with placement and support, very easy to listen to like this, immediate imaging and great timing with paul Simon.
I wont overlisten until I locate the stands, the seller has disappeared, so I look sommore.
This is going to be fun!

In a shop in iowa (clinton?) I first heard them with mac ampsm in a small room. I was looking for the sub, haha.
Other time was in Toronto at the electronics show at the international centre, about 3 years ago, with Levinson power. Not a good space to listem, too much ambient noise there in a corner booth, which belonged to a dealer that I dont recall, not from toronto.
At that point, I didnt pay as much attention to sources as i do now, just amps and speakers, and I always remembered the little Totems.
These will not tear down the house volume wise. Max spl is around 109, and max power is listed at 200w.
The 600 or so I have available seems to be fine, sharp, square and very very fast, all 20w so far, lol! |

The RH speaker points directly at the refrigerator, ugh.
I see an auralex panel coming very soon!
But even at lower volume to keep things calm, these Totems are amazing me.
Now at proper height and with some solid support, the speaks have been brought out 5' from the rear wall, and I am bringing them back closer a few inches at a time to judge the happenings.
Just for laughs I went to 2', hehe. The bass did not get muddy or mixed up at all, just overpowering, or overbearing, I suppose.

Some observations...
I have the Totems reasonably placed, 30" from rear and 24 from side walls, no toe, 76" apart, 84" to my noggin.
Played Best of robert Palmer and cued up bass heavy(and groovin) Doctor, Doctor.
The bass is very very good, very involving, and rolls away at a perfect crossover. The definition in the upper registers is very impressive for me, as I need extension and good highs. The seperation of percussion and effect is rather good and always in perfect time with striking a cymbal in your room.
This definition is in no way lost to the bass and drums. Even perfectly timed and tuned rhythm section can be defined by tone and location, front left or center.
Cool!
So I decide to see how loud they can play, and this is interesting.
On the Psb's I would max on a Robert Palmer (simply irresistable ie) at 40 on the dial. You can imagine how loud this is.
I ran the Totems up to 33 and that was it, the bass drivers were overextending their coils and backing off, so that was it.
The Totems are 85db, the psb's, 87.
Max SPL is Totem 110 in room, I think the psb's were 112.
It was not loud, although I had a scotch.
Man, it sounds sweet!
So I figgur i will try the apollo, since I hadnt played it on the big kit for over a year.
warmup, have beer, push play.
Shake head.
Repeat song, and beer.
My trans-dac must be filty or broke, cause the Apollo trashed it in every department. Guys, it went from good to great!
Trans-dac for sale, and front speakers+sub.
I need to clean the apollo as well, that will be in my spare time, like.
In fact I need to open and spring clean it all.
The room is going to work ok, I think, but...
The kitchen photo is from the lert front. The Tright Totem directly faces the refrigerator.
On one hand I dont have to reach far for a beer, on the other flipper, it (^&$%)& my RH sound.
Auralex panel..next paycheck.
I am soo tempted to bring out the table, but I have to pass tonight, still working too much in here, leave it covered.

No it does not make sense to me. Why if you set up your speakers with your Apollo would you suggest that any room treatments would be driven by the VPI? I understand the VPI dictating where it goes but that's all I get.

The guy who bought it has B&W 804's.
Presently, he has a 162/272 NAD for them. I suggested that he get a Classe amp asap, and get balanced.
He is working on it.

seen here is a good view of the infinate baffle and the volume compensated mass velocity ports on the mids. Stunning.
The entire kit is finished off with the big unit.
this liquid cooled stand alone electric is near matching in appearance, also features infinate baffle, and is heavily mass loadable. Porting is of the intermittant design.
As seen by these shots, the units are ready to go for drivers, front baffles, XO's and grilles.
The unique 'early stages' look leaves finish available to the ladies likes.
I have seen a very good naugahide set, and a zebra skin is available locally, thanks to Cless and the abbatiore and taxidermy guys!

Fabulous job matey! Looks like it's coming along great. I am quite surprised that the Rega was that much better than the TransDAC (well, not that surprised). I would be very surprised if the DacMagic were superior.
When I saw the original pics I didn't realise you would be happy to crowd the doors, which is why i was concerned about the room placement. |

Our VPI table playing through the Classe DR5 preamp, which is really a wonderful phono.
AlStewart...Year of the Cat. lovely.
On deck is joe Walsh there.
the volume is low, as the woofers are doing the hootchie Kootchie, the tble is on a glass stand on points, hehe.

JV has a 200 lb. or so butcher block under the VPI.
I am with Neil, it would take me a lot lot longer to pull off what you did in your place. Actually, I am not that talented, I couldn't do all that no matter what the time table. That is a lot of work in a very short time.

I obtained an oak entertainment unit for pennies, but it has to be cut to size to work right. Hmmm
New speaker cables in the house and another set bought outright, to be tested and reviewed.
All the other stuff is coming back from storage today, so the 1973 Pioneer is coming home and the DCM TW3a speakers, for which I have replacement tweeters.
Need more space for the gear, hehe.
The drum kit is here as well, now to clean out the basement to make room for a floating floor to set it up.

Here is a view of the front door now.
uhh..well, it is a sheet of auralex covering the door, with another on the opposite wall.
These panels 'cusion' the rear firing ports of the Totems.
The net effect is as I had hoped. I havebeen able to recess the speakers deeper into the rear wall.
The move is actually nearly a foot, placing the speaks and stands only 34" from the rear wall, thus opening the room up quite a bit. Very good.
The bass response is unaffected, really, at least so far. The move has reinforced the need to control the low-end response a bit more, so i am going to measure and cut a plinth for the mission stands tonight.
Maybe not a big Saturday night, but it keeps my eye off of the Leafs game... |
