I'm looking to buy my first ever turntable. I have no equipment to start off with, know practically nothing about stereo equipment and have an extremely limited budget ($200-300 probably). I just need to know what basic equipment I need to listen to vinyl, all the components, including speakers, and also briefly what each thing is (I hear these terms thrown out but really don't know what it all means). I really honestly have no idea where to start. I care very much about sound quality. Obviously I have a strict budget to bear in mind but would rather pay more for something better. Any help/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Laurie, you have a significantly limited budget. You need a turntable, a receiver with phono for one of its options, and two speakers or headphones, whichever you require. If you buy speakers ask them for some wire and have them show you how to hook them up. Shorting out speaker wire could fry both speakers and receiver.

For quality at a discount check pawn shops (barter heavily) or resale shops, perhaps a Goodwill, or garage sales.

To get an idea of what is out there do a search on the internet or take a look at these;

go about half way down on the page this link takes you to;

Or else just get headphones for now and pick up speakers later when you have time.

Nothing wrong with the pawn shop route if you know what you're doing and can get some advice on the stuff you find before you part with cash. Otherwise ...

At minimum you'll need something in the way of speakers or headphones to make sound. I've heard these, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8289167&type=product&id=1172277277 943 and they sound quite good for the money. They don't have deep bass but they are well balanced over most of the music's range. If you place them in corners or against a wall, you will gain a litle oomph in the bottom octaves until you have more available funds for better sound. But the mid's are nice and that's where 90% of the real music is anyway.

You can buy an inexpensive receiver to begin with. This one works and makes for one stop shopping and a service center if needed, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8254612&st=stereo+receiver&lp=2&ty pe=product&cp=1&id=1169512582154

Then you need a turntable, I would suggest a Dual but they are hard to come by since not many people part with a working Dual, http://www.audioclassics.com/detail.php3?detail=CS1245&nav=cat.
If you find one it should go for well under $100. A pre owned Technics or vintage 1970's table will do but stay away from the crap that's made from plastic.

You will get the most performance from a "manual" turntable but the least convenience. With a manual table, you have to move the tonearm on and off the record. With a semi-automatic the arm lifts at the end of the side. A fully automatic table moves the arm all over the place but costs more and has more to go wrong. You might find something at a garage sale or thrift shop that works and fits your budget or ...

Then you need a phono pre amp to plug the turntable into; http://www.phonopreamps.com/

That will just about use up a $300 budget but will get you music and a system that can grow as you get more funds.

Stay away from Jack Zeng@gmail. That little device will keep you occupied and engaged in listening to you music for about 1 minute; mostly because you'll be wondering how that ring-tone quality of sound can come out of something that looks like Darth Vader's Yo-Yo. LOL!

A yo-you that doubled as a MP3 player I might pay for...say $5. But now that I've mentioned Darth Vader, Jack's gonna have George Lucas after him for royalties. Jack Zeng...are you afraid...no...you will be, you will be.

FuckingIPODbullshit. Jack, that thing looks like the biggest piece of crap I have ever seen come out of china. And pretty much everything coming out of china is crap. That says a lot.lol. Way to post an I Pod ad in a forum where people actually like to listen to their music in a proper environment.
