George: "...Astrud Gilberto - Verve classics..."

I listen to a LOT of Bossa. I have over a hundred albums and cds of various styles from Brazil.
The thread on 'all time favorite' jazz albums was a question I did not answer because I cannot narrow it down below a treatise.
Definately on that list is the original Stan Getz with Jobim, Jao and Astrud Gilberto in Brazil. That is the one with "Girl from Ipenema", but every song was great through 2 albums.
Getz made more great Bossa Nova albums but that original group was the classic greatest.
He also recorded with Charlie Byrd and even live at Carnegie Hall.

There are still great albums coming from Brazil regularly. Marisa Monte 2 most recent are great. Also Rosa Passos, and many more.

Nov 1 - Ravi Coltrane live at YBCA in San Francisco w/ Luis Perdomo, Drew Gress, and EJ Strickland

Wonderful concert - a little out there for my wife, but I loved it. Maybe 300 persons in attendance. Ravi played no soprano, only tenor. His cousin with whom he was very close had passed away the day before the show, so it was very emotional. He played his heart out. This quartet is fabulous together. Very special show. Next CD is due out in a couple of months - "Blending Times", which is also the name of one of the tunes on his "In Flux" CD.

Nov 2 - Marcin Wasilewski Trio at Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Only about 150 in this wonderfully acoustic small theater, and Marcin on a Steinway & Sons piano. His third time at the SF Jazz Festival. Slawomir Kurkiewicz played the smaller bass, and was excellent. These three guys are the real deal. Also more approachable music for my wife, who enjoyed it. "The Cat" and "January", two of my favorite pieces of theirs, were beautifully done.

All in all, a great pair of shows. Can't wait 'til next year.

So, that's what I've been listenin' to!

PS, these were the first acoustic jazz shows I have attended since putting my system together. On comparing the live sound with my gear when I got home, except for some slight balancing issues at the live performances (mainly getting the drums quiet enough), I am extremely pleased with the comparison.

Cheers.

Neil,

Nice to hear you are at such a place with your gear. What have you got anyways - your profile is not updated and your comments about how it sounds compared to live jazz spiked my interest.

Cheers.

Interesting fact (or not); Henry Rollins (born Henry Lawrence Garfield) took his stage name from Sonny Rollins. He was a huge jazz fan. If you listen the Rollins Band later stuff you hear a definite jazz/metal/hardcore fusion. The End of Silence... oh yeah.
