Was reading today some of the posts on Amazon about the new Metallica album, about how the new album is compressed to max the max (Metallica's participation in the "loudness wars").

I read the the Guitar Hero release of Death Magnetic does not have the same level of dynamic compression that the CD release has.

I'm downloading it now in FLAC format to check it out. I don't feel one ioata of guilt either - I've aleady bought the CD, and if a band won't release a CD without dynamic compression I have a right to obtain a clear version of it after shelling out my 16 bucks.

So there Lars...

There's a mention of Rush's Vapour Trails in the Rolling Stones' article about the loudness wars. Too bad even legit, established artists have to succumb to this.

I liked you better the old way.

Speaking of Gilmour, the Costco shopper I am, I just picked up David Gilmour - Live at Gdansk, a 2 CD, 1 DVD package. I hope to have time this weekend to listen to it and watch it.

lol, MW. All of a sudden you've gone into hiding. Mike3? Come on, we all know who you are.

I saw that live Gilmour is going to be released this month (I think) on 180g vinyl. I think it was 5 lp's for around $100. Let me know what you think of it, huh?

Like a review is going to matter...I'm going to buy it anyway. lol

Me too. In fact I missed out on the 3cd/2dvd version Best Buy was offering for $49.99 a few days ago. I think there was a limited amount at that price both for walk-ins and online. Closest BB for me is 65 miles. I see that price is now sitting at $69.99...snooze-u-lose.

I am real happy with it. I thought its opening and closing tracks were the better cuts.

I really got into the flow of their instrumental "Suicide and Redemption".

Drums were more like earlier Metallica.

Strong guitar work to be found as well.

The Guitar Hero version (available for d/l in FLAC format) has two versions of Suicide and Redemption. One with a solo by JH and one with a solo by KH.

Good stuff.

Less nasty compression on the GH version too.
