Deschutes Brewery "Mirror Pond Pale Ale"
In my estimation, it is the finest beer in the world.
Deschutes used to be a pretty small Central Oregon brewery. But with Mirror Pond, and "Black Butte Porter", they made too very studly beers, and they are quite popular here.
Not sure how far they are distributed, but I would give them only a few more years before they are Sierra Nevada level.
Their beer has always remained great and their pub offerings (not bottled) are exquisite.
One of the truly great microbrews in the world. |

Deschutes from Central Oregon and New Belgium from Colorado are my 2 favorite. Both have so many great offerings it's impossible to narrow them down. My summer time fav is Skinny Dip from New Belgium and a fall favorite for me Obsidian Stout from Deschutes. Decided to try that Green Lakes Organic from Deschutes yesterday...they never brew a bad one.
Tough to be at the top here in Oregon, the Microbrew capitol of the world, but Deschutes is at the top...IMHO. |

You guys see a beer and then all is lost!
I don't know much about hifi but I am with you guys on the beer.
I agree that OR has more than it's share of the best including Deschutes. I get my share of it too. Don't forget other great ones such as Rogue (Newport, OR), yumm Honey Cream Ale, Dead Guy Ale. They were the only beer at the Mt. Hood Jazz Fest which was a lot of publicity. I visited the Rogue Brewery about 2 yrs ago, as well as Sierra Nevada in Chico, Pelican also on the coast and Pike Place in Seattle. I visit Bend often, but have yet to get to the brewery. Next spring for sure. I use the time to eat excuse for the brewery stops, ha ha. |

David. Many thanks!
The Energy's do a fine job for the HT. Since I sidegraded to the C-100 fronts they all match. Nice bit of piano gloss showing on every speaker. Matches well with the surround on the Vizio.
The surrounds are wall mounted as best as possible...
Also, using the LCD as my interface for Foobar and my music library is sweet.
I would obviously like to move things around a bit to get some space between things. But this is the best I can do now, with my current room and girlfriend.
During listening sessions, the grilles go on the Arivas, and the couch is rotated a few feet so it is facing the Naim kit and not the TV.
The ALL Naim kit is indescribable... so amazing. Every single day of my life is now filled with "real" music. |

Absolutely.
Foobar is BY FAR the best player I have ever encountered. I have tried most of them.
It is free, customizable beyond belief, no one is trying to sell you anything, and is a great converter in its own right.
When transcoding to MP3 for a friend, it is fast and reliable.
It is fast, 60,000 songs in a playlist without any hitches, glitches or lagging.
It would take A LOT to make me change to something else. |

Thanks guys for your comments. Yes, that's an old Techniques SL-QD2 turntable. I'm the original owner. It's not audiophile but it plays my vinyl for me. It's direct drive with an Ortofon cartridge. Vinyl in still fun to play with - you feel like you're doing a little more with the music. I'm not going to insist it sounds better, though. |

Yup Nick. I am using the Onkyo's phono, which was part of the reason I was attacted to the AVR. It seems to work fine. I would not look at another phone stage unless I was spending more than $700 on a TT. |

Hey guys. No one got back to me on my post that I put on the PHONO category re: Thorens TD160, so I gave up and purchased a Goldring GR1.2 new from a dealer. I'll post pictures once I get it. It's my first real entry back into vinyl. Sold the old Techniques Direct Drive and got 2/3 of what I originally paid for it back in 1986. Cheers! |

Here's some photos of a secondary 2 channel system I set up for music. I used an old Kenwood receiver that I had sitting around and my Rotel RB-1070. I'm using a PC source (all FLAC, of course) with an outboard USB DAC.
I was doing a listening session last night after my kids went to bed and I was quite happy with the results. Of course the Totem speakers don't hurt :-)

lol Of course man, you guys would never need invites of course, anytime you guys are in town is a party in my books. Hit me up.lol.
What you cant see in any of the rec room pics is that when u are sitting at the main couch if you look to your right against the wall there is another white door. This door is all insulated and sealed off and looked like the guy was making it a cold room or a new bathroom. Its the only unfinished room in the house. My thoughts are this(One day):
Sell the TV, and move the audio rack into this room so that its accessible by opening the door and is out of site. This means only the three speakers on the front wall opening up about 65 inches of space allowing me to hang, or make a bit white screen for a HD projector. This is going to be my next goal, wont be until next year however as I just don't feel like moving it all at this time. It would also mean all new Audio cables except for all the speaker cable I ran in the drop ceiling which will still be fine. I could also put the audio stand directly behind the wall as that other white door to the left of the subwoofer is like a 12 X 50 storage/work shop room...oh the possibilities.lol

P.S. David, I remember that same model 57 inch Sony Projection TV. My friend(also hi fi nut) had it and sold it to my wife's brother who still owns it. Its a classic. Best in its class at the time. |

We will be selling our Sony LCD RPTV this spring and going to a flat LCD...in a smaller size.
Next project is to (very inexpensively) streamline the HT. Thinking about Atom Monitors all the way around (no center) with a 40-42 inch LCD..still use the REL and the Yammie AVR (which BTW I really like for HT). |

The Totems are definitely the best part of the system. Obviously the old Kenwood HT receiver for a pre-amp is not.
I guess that will be my next purchase.
Any recommendations for a relatively cheap pre? Since I'm using a Rotel amp (which I guess I'll end up keeping), maybe a Rotel pre would be satisfactory? |

Art, the Atoms all around would be great for HT, and would probably match nice with the Yammie. I have the V5's, and they're great little speakers. I like them better than the Monitor 7 v4's I used to own. |

Rotel pre's usually go for pretty cheap on Audiogon. I saw a few one generation old pre's go for about $225. Current ones are a little more. I saw some integrateds go for very cheap as well. Maybe use one as a pre? |

I have heard the Rotel RA-02. Its very good for its price, and a steal at $250 IMO. Haven't heard it as a dedicated pre-amp though. For $250 (I know, it was sold), if it doesn't work out, you'll easily get that if you sell it.

The center channel is very important. I don't advocate for a 2-channel system or even a phantom center if the material needs the extra channels. If you need it and are going to do it, do it right. The center is the most important speaker in a home theater. |

it CAN be done to phantom a center...but the location and allocation are rather fixed. Throw in a proper center, and things get soooo much easier.... |

To me it is more cohesive without the center channel. I have often heard gaps in the soundstage with a center channel in use. When I was using my Monitor Audios with Creek or Carver, or Gallo's with Carver I had a full landscape for sound.
I do not even know why I am arguing this since the house I have came with in wall HT Klipsch left right front and rears and a wall mount center which I do use.
My point being I can put the money to better use elsewhere in the system than for a center channel given the choice. |

Well, I agree with you Mike for stereo music  otherwise, with all respect, I have to disagree except under one circumstance: that you listen alone in the sweet spot.
In my experience, with the hi-res surround formats and HT, the center does exactly what it is supposed to do - whereas on titles with no center channel, the focus can be less than ideal and at times the sound less dynamic.
If given the choice between processed surround and stereo, I'd take stereo any day, but if you have discreet multi-channel, then the center - like the mains and rears - behaves exactly as intended without the need to sit smack bang in that sweet spot, thus allowing multi listeners to appreciate the soundstage.
Sorry to keep of the original topic, but I thought I'd stick my nose into this one. But heck, it's really whatever floats your boat isn't it? |

I had six kids, her 3, my 3, 5 years from youngest to oldest. We once had a turtle that we had to feed live fish and then it started keeping a few of the fish as companions, so we had to start feeding the turtle food. Go figure.
