I would like to know what most people think about using two subs, one per channel or just one mono? I have allways thought one would do but here I heard someone mention one per channel.

Try this, above link
Most HT gear has a single LF output for a reason.....no stereo information at those frequencies, not to mention you can't localize it, anyway.

I used to run two crappy subs, then I bought a half decent Velodyne. One good sub is way better than two crappy ones.

I ran two before because I was concerned about hearing the bass coming from just one corner, but it's really a non-issue. The bass is almost completely non-directional.

I agree with the others. One good sub will generally work out best; however, some have two subs (one for music and one for HT), though they don't run them at the same time.
Now there are some speakers out there with built in amplfied subs. In this case you would get one sub / channel. Check out Definitive Technology. Their speaker/sub systems do work very well for HT.

If you only have 300$ to spend, one sub it is!
But at some price point, and depending on how large the room is, it is probably best to go with double subs. I have a HSU VTF2mkIII in a fairly large room, over 5000ft3 and it works fine, If I ever work up the nerve, I'll buy a second.
It is good with both HT and musical uses.
IMO, a sub which is only 'good' for HT is inadequate in the first place.
