Neil,

Sunday at the Village Vanguard is the reissue I have on 180gm vinyl and it's gorgeous. I don't believe Waltz for Debby has been reissued but I could be wrong about that.

Impulse's 'Waltz' reissue on CD has the extra takes right in the middle of the tracks so you get two versions of the same thing one after the other which I find immensely unsatisfying! At least Verve put in the extras at the end of the disc so you choose to hear them again later which makes much more sense to me.

I just picked up some sealed vinyl, among them, which I just recently listened to;

Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Black Sabbath - Paranoid

Turned them up loud and proud and wow, for new vinyl, even disc washed them, they were noisy and hissy as hell. Jan explained to me that when these were produced there was a lot of recycled vinyl making it not for ideal playback on kits like ours.

Tonight I just blasted away with a 180 gram Rhino Vinyl release of Machine Head by Deep Purple which I also bought sealed. The loudest music I ever played. No hiss, no hearing left either probably.

I am going to have to keep on eye out for more of these RhinoVinyl releases.

Past few days I have spun all vinyl;

ChangesOneBowie

The Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky

Willie Nelson and Family - Honeysuckle Rose

Mannheim Steamroller - Fresh Aire V
Cambridge Singers
London Symphony

Alice Cooper - Quiet Room (original)

Grand Funk Railroad (original red album)

The James Gang - Yer' Album (original)

Oh, and one CD;

Mudcrutch

Last night was various tracks from many Aphex Twin albums.

Wow.... now that is music that makes one understand what a Naim kit does so well.

Bought some used vinyl a week or two ago and finally got around to spinning 'em -

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Eric Clapton - 461 Ocean Blvd
Eric Clapton - Slowhand

The Wall sounds phenominal, but has way too much surface noise. I'd love it if it was re-released on 180 gm vinyl like Dark Side. Maybe one day...

Mike,

Were those old sealed vinyl, or new stuff? I've got Paranoid and In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (both new re-issues) and neither one has any problems. My In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was pretty warped, but I got it to slowly flatten out by placing it in the middle of my albums.

The standard weight Paranoid doesn't nearly as good as the 180 gm version. If you have the 180 gm, maybe you got a bad one?

Hey Nuck, yup got some good bass but not good enough, as the wife's at home and kids asleep. Don't have the best copy - some distortion on vocals on some tracks.

To end of the night:
A couple track of Paul Simon, Graceland - vinyl

Oh bye-the-way Nuck, kinda weird but my wife was watching Apollo 13 tonight on one of the specialty cable channels. Don't have the soundtrack.

If you like soundtracks, have you got Gladiator, I don't but I've heard it's great.

Stu,

Old sealed vinyl which seemed like a great idea at the time. The Rhinovinyl Machine Head gives me an idea of what you mean by new re-issues.

Still playing most of the same jazz artists as Art and Neil. Making a list of those I don't have or know.
Besides rediscovering the vinyl tombs, I have been getting some new cds.

Tony Bennett- American Classic Celebrates 80 with many stars, eg Diana Krall, Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, BB King, Sheryl Cow, Stevie W, Natalie Cole etc

Earl Klug- Naked Guitar

Esparanza Spalding. This young gal from Portland, OR was the youngest teacher ever at Berklee School of Music, Boston. A bass player and singer.
You will see her in the latest Jazz Times, Down Beat and on the Cover of Jazziz Magazine this month. She is going to be BIG.

Other newly released cds by:

Jazziz sampler- 10 women singers, one song each.
Cassandra Wilson- Loverly
Willie and Winton Live- Two Men with the Blues
Duke Robillard- A Swingin Session with
Dr John- City that Care Forgot
Otis Taylor- Rediscovering the Banjo
Roy Hargrove !!!!
Marcia Ball- Peace, Love and BBQ

Two radically different takes on the 3rd Symphony. The first sprightly, using the leaner forces of the Tonhalle and the second majestic and grand in the way that we traditionally think of that symphony...arguably the first piece of the Romantic period.
