I was fortunate enough to have a quick listen to this setup... unfortunately it was at a big box store which happens to be a "bose" re-seller which also happened to have this beauty hooked up to a set of 901s :p

have a look

as far as I could tell, they powered very well, but the speakers were sevearly limited its potential

I'm contemplaiting whether to take this baby home to see if it can do what other recommendations can at a far higher price point.
This integate is 2K, the CDP is 1.5K

I think there was thread on here a little while ago about this.

It's good to see Yamaha attempt to reclaim some of it's former glory.

anyone who has insight into whether the design is good enough to compete with the big names?

As in my post above, I'm looking into some Simaudio, Naim type of equipment
but this Yammie is roughly in the same pricepoint but I like the asthetics and power rating better

Paul,
Have you had any luck finding a sales rep for the a-s2000?
I've sent two e-mails to Yamaha requesting some info but no response yet.
It sure looks attractive, if we could only audition it!
Good luck

Just F.Y.I. in case you are interested

Reply from Yamaha regarding the a-s2000:

Thank you again for your inquiry. At this point we have not begun shipping the unit that you mentioned. And there is not official date at this point.

Best Regards,
The Yamaha Customer Support Team

Good luck

"you have a competent but unsatisfying sound, lacking the warmth, tonal colours"
