So, my setup is a high end stereo system - NAD separates and PSB speakers.
Now, i realize dvd-a is multichannel (basically, a CD with Dolby), correct?
Also, the quality is said to be much higher than cd, because of space, etc.
Now, Can my NAD stereo system (no digital stuff) take advantage of DVD-A properly or should I just get a DVD player that doesn't have DVD-A for now?
I want a dvd player bad because my PS2 is such a horrible....everything...as far as home theater goes.

DVD-A will not play on a regular cd player. You'll need to play it on a dvd player. All the DVD-A's I've seen include a DTS layer, and both 2 channel and 5.1 channel hi-rez. Most all dvd players now can decode and play DTS, via the analog connects or send the digital signal to a DTS capable receiver to decode. But only players specifically designed to decode DVD-A can play the high-rez, via the analog connects. |

Dan-
Not only will you need a DVD player that has DVD-A capability (although it will play on a standard dvd player--just not up to its capability)--but you will need an AV surround receiver and at least a 5.1 set-up.
If you don't want to buy that many speakers and an AV receiver or AV preamp/multi-channel amplifer it is undoubtedly a waste of money to get involved with surround formats. But at least with a dvd player you can watch movies in stereo with your current set-up or listen to dvd-A's in stereo. Actually, you can get an inexpensive Sony DVD player with SACD, as there are quite a few SACD recordings in stereo. |

dan the answer would be yes.
you can play both dvd-a and scad in 2 channel
stereo with 2 analog rca connections.
and i highly recomend it.
me personally i would buy a universal dvd player
like the denon 2200 so you can take advantage of
both high resolution formats. |

or like gregory said you can go the inexpensive
route on the player.
i also have the pioneer 563a $140 from best buy
that will play both "sacd and dvd-audio"
(mispelled on previos post)
this player works fine and plays nice not quite
as good of sound quality as the denon but still
much better than cd! |

Well, currently, I have a Playstation2 for DVD AND CD  .
Kegger (lovely name, btw  ):
How do you like the 563? I have read some reviews and honestly I am highly considering it. I want to get a universal player, so I won't have to replace it, but, since I opted for stereo, I think the pioneer is a good choice for a budget-minded person.
I am curious how well it plays CDs - I assume anything is better than the Playstation2? lol

for the budget minded i think the unit is great.
it plays cd's fine and all the different media
formats you might try including copied media.
and it's a very good dvd video source also.

I have a 563-A as well, and agree with Kegger. Tough to beat as far as versatility, "for the price." Of special note, evidentally there is an issue with this model not being able to play certain DVD-A's - Steely Dan's Gaucho for one. From what I hear its easily fixed by way of a firmware upgrade. Unfortunately its not a DIY upgrade, you have to take it or send it to a service center. Reminds me...I think i'll pick up Gaucho, both as a test to see if mine has been upgraded, and also because I love the album. |

Not sure which way I want to go (budget or no budget). I bought my audio setup just this past Friday.
I got stereo because I do not have a good room layout for multichannel and i got the NAD stuff at a real good deal. Well I am making this thread turn into a DVD player thread, not a DVD-A thread. so i'll shut up now ;) |

DVD-Audio on Pioneer 563-A Not so hot?
I have a well reviewed Beethoven dvd Audio (actually 3 of them) by Abbado. The sound on this DVD-A is supposed to be 9 out of 10. I have regular cds that sound better.
Maybe I hooked up my Pioneer 563-A wrong? SACDs sound pretty good.
I am playing both in stereo currently- I do need a new receiver to get better sound and to get surround sound. It is on the way.

mine works just great on dvd-a.
all of my speakers are set to large with sub on.
maybe that will help. |

you mean on the receiver? Or on the dvd player? I did not see a way to set them on the dvd player (I did not choose surround set up cause I don't have it yet. Soon I will.) |

on the dvd player.
even in 2 channel it can use the sub and bass
management.
you have to do it with no disk in the unit and go
into either advanced setup or initial setup.
it's been a while since i fiddled with mine but
it does play dvd-a's very nice.
some disks do sound better than others.
and some people say a disk sounds good not just
the equalization or record quality but by how
well it is mixed for multi channel.
so just because the sound is suppose to be 9 out
of 10 doesn't nessacarily mean really clear or
well eq'd.
i have not heard that disk so i can't tell you. |
