Anyone have any good recommendations for vinyl record storage, other than milk crates? I'm looking for some sort of furniture that will store them safely and also please the wife with its aesthetics. I've found a few online, but nothing great. A modular or stackable system would be ideal. |

Ikea Traby System. If you have an Ikea near you, check it out. They've got a bunch of options for feet, doors, etc. They can be stacked, wall mounted, or be used by themselves on the floor. The pictures don't do it much justice. They're real wood with very little finish coating.
I use one for my vinyl. LPs fit prefectly.

I think I own all 4 things they make out of real wood. The Traby cabinet being one of them. Being wood, it seems more sturdy and I'm not hesitant to put albums in it, which as we all know can get pretty heavy. |

I like the Ikea Traby, but I'm also thinking of the Salamander Archetype for my whole system, and dedicate a few of the shelves to vinyl, using the optional bookends that they sell. They look a little skimpy though, I wonder if they're tall enough to hold the records well...

The best I ever saw was a long bench running along the wall with drawers under. The drawers custom made to fit exactly the LPs.
Inspired by that, I had a piano bench custom made that fits the lps perfectly. The rest simply on book shelves.
My method to "please the wife with its aesthetics" is to put the vinyl in MY room. Remember back in the day when men had a "den" or "shop". Mine is just a bedroom. So far, I have not been banished to my room. |

I use Army surplus ammo cans - they look a little rough, but they're a perfect fit. They're also airtight, watertight, nearly bulletproof, and strong enough to park a bulldozer on. The 25mm 30-cartridge can is the best fit, but it's only ~5" wide, so it only holds ~40 single albums. |

No offense intended Steve, but are you storing your LPs on the deck of a fishing boat on the open sea? Well, Tennessee, I guess you could get hurricanes ;)
My lps were stored for 17 years in milk crates in an old dilapidated unheated travel trailer. Rain in summer and temps up to 50 below in winter and they came out fine.
I will keep the ammo cans in mind if I ship some on a barge from Alaska to the States 
btw, I use them for tool boxes in a truck. |

i went to home depot and picked up a under cabinet light strip. They have a hole for the cord in the back of the cabinet. It really looks cool. Make sure you get the light strip that sticks...just easier. |

An update: I received my LP cabinet from www.lpstoragesolutions.com and I'm very happy with it. Good customer service, arrived on time, and easy to put together. Looks great, and yes the wife likes it. Highly recommended. I couldn't find any others like it on the web.
Oh, and also a second on the sleeves from sleevetown (recommended by John above). I have a bunch of their inner and outer sleeves, well worth getting. |

Art, that just about happened. Went to a garage sale yesterday, got the typical "What are you looking for?" I say CDs she says some guy just bought a box full of them for $10. I ask about vinyl and she says "those old records?". I got the box of them about 75 in all for $10. I didn't even look at anything more than the condition of the 1st one. Of the 75 there were maybe 5 I already had. I will probably listen to all but about 10 of them. Highlights are Beatles 1962-1966, Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies, a couple of George Carlin's, and a sealed Dr. Hook Pleasure and Pain.
Oh yeah, she then gave a Technics TT with an Audioquest cartridge for free.

Ha ha, 'never cry wolf': Me too, I have bought so much stuff for "only $10" that she would just laugh!
No kidding, freak coincidence, I got a free Technics tt from a buddy. I use it as a home made record cleaner with a Fein cannister vac (low emmission, quiet, cheap).
As for LP storage, I just need a bigger place to live, hopefully with no orang-outangs living upstairs. |
