Then some Hip. Grace Too.

You're in my thoughts & prayers. One at a time, bud.

Tool - Lateralus - vinyl picture disc

Listened to some stryvn cooked Zeppelin over the weekend, along with Plant / Kraus, Seeger, Pavarotti, and bits and pieces of this that and the other.

Of course Kelly is still having me spin Fergie, Alicia, and Avril on the CD player.

Then there was this masterpiece;

B.B. King - Live at Cook County Jail
180 Gram vinyl MFSL remastered from the original tapes. Courtesy of my Canadian friend Nuck.

It is just that much deeper, quieter, more realistic than the regular cut. It really makes me want to pick up my Lucille and learn how to make it sing. Not that that is going to happen any time soon. LOL

Stu, I sent you a PM.

Warming up for the Bears game tonight...

after Tool I pulled out;

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Live Alive
Double vinyl

I actually pulled this out this past weekend but just got to it now. This is a first, even thought it had an after market plastic album cover sleeve over it the album appears to not have been ever played. It had slivers of vinyl still statically clinging to it which I vacuumed off during cleaning and destaticing. It certainly plays like new record. It even has one of those "For Promotion Only" stamps on the back of the jacket, to make it appear rarer I guess. I know I did not pay much for this. Bill's here in Dallas where I bought it is usually all over what he sells. He really cut me a break on this one or he just did not know what he had in that sleeve?

Hope I am not late for the game......

naw...Live Alive older than the City Limits stuff, Nuck. I wanna say 85 or so. I seem to recall the early release of that album had Life Without You on it, but it was omitted from the cd.

Went out to hear our local hot blues band tonight. They did an great job of backing up James Armstrong a few weeks ago. http://www.jarmblues.com/ Our guy is actually better which made Armstrong very happy and loose.

I will be in Seattle for only 5 days around New Years. I plan to see Pancho Sanchez at the Jazz Alley, as well as Pearl Django (fiddler from here made it big!).

I hired a Seattle band for my Mom's birthday party. The Haggis Bros. Another awsome fiddler in Seattle. Those guys really know how to have fun!

Hope to see Ronnie Pierce at the Wiskey Bar in Belltown. A great local jazz jam scene. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=725785 05
Just a block down from Tula's.

That is about all I can do in 5 days!

Took my office into the 'vinyl room' today:

Pat Metheny- Letter From Home
Baden Powell- Solitude on Guitar
Chick and Burton Live Zurich '79 2LP
Abercrombe/Towner- Sargasso Sea
Earl 'Fatha" Hines- The Father of Modern Jazz Piano. 5 LP Box set. Classic!
With Budd Johnson.

too much more...I am never going to get through this pile, let alone burn any cds. That was the original idea for setting up the Rega. Now I just listen when I can. Never even tried out the cd burner. hmmmm.

Right now, it is Joe Henderson- Double Rainbow. Excellent!

Abbey Sings Abbey is an interesting album.
This is a challenge to do a completely new interpretation of ones' own songs . Not the same as an unplugged album but some analogy could be made. Her classic jazz performances are all so brilliant with giants accompanying her, you wonder what she could be trying to do. After listening to it 4 times, I had to go back to the origingl versions.
On You Gotta Pay the Band, she has Stan Getz and Hank Jones, Charlie Haden etc at their best. You could file it under Hank Jones because he is so great here, and also brilliant solos from Getz. This might be one of the greatest albums of all time.
On A Turtle's Dream there are so many including Haden, Hargrove, Barron, Metheney, etc... Just beautiful playing.
On other albums she had Joe Lovano, Turrentine, Gary Burton, Jackie McLean, Ron Carter and on and on with all great players.

So on Abbey Sings Abbey she has made succeeded in doing these songs in a non jazz album. Gil Goldstein and the rhythm section provide a smooth cushy ride while Larry Cambell shines on guitar. I can't believe I was unfamiliar with him, but a look on google you see he has played with many people. You can see why. He dances around Abbey and really makes the album.
For a guitar player who can improve someones work so much, and yet not distract from it, I put him up with my favorite guitar back up guys. Patricia Barber has Neal Alger. John Prine has Jason Wilber. I have to say he did as good a job as Hank Jones et al.

Several hours per day I listen to new music on Jazz with Bob Parlocha. Check out his play lists! http://www.jazzwithbobparlocha.com/top40/index.html

Great posts as usual Kevin...a whole lotta great music contained within.

I listened to the Michael Brecker and Charlie Hayden selections you posted just yesterday.

My Dad used to bend elbows with ole Earl Hines. they loved the "wine, women and song" as pops used to say.

Today...

Charlie Haden and Kenny Barron - Night and the City
Wynton Marsalis - Think of One
Wynton Marsalis - J Mood
Vince Gauraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas
Alice Coltrane - Translinear Light

Abby Sings Abby is very nice indeed...

I will look for that Naxos.
Do you have any suggestions for music stores in Seattle?? I will sell my old Onix amp to Hawthorne. Maybe I should listen to some Rega and Naim Speakers for future reference. They have DeVore Fidelity but probably way out of my range. Also Focal.JMlab and Quads. Nearby there are Vienna and B&W. I read that B&W has a great new budget priced speaker. I don't dare listen to anything costing more than $1500!

Back in the vinyl office today and found some good ones I had forgotten:
Chet Baker- Peace, '82 Enya with David Friedman, Buster Williams and Joe Chambers. No vocals which are the Chet lps I like.
Ralf Towner- Old Friends, New Friends 1979 w/Kennie Wheeler, Eddie Gomez, David Darling and...
Gary Burton-Times Square '78 w Roy Haynes, Steve Swallow, Tiger Okoshi.
Atlantic Soul 2 LP Collection: 1948-1973;

Art- Wow Earl Hines seems like he was a very charming upbeat guy from what I read. Seems like he knew how to have fun.

Since I got my turntable I bought a new copy of this rare box set. I play my old copy and have not opened the new one yet. Otherwise I would bid on this. It has never been on CD as far as I know.

jazz piano fans- Here is that LP.
http://cgi.ebay.com/VG-Earl-Fatha-Hines-5-LP-Father-of-Modern-Jazz-Piano_W0QQite mZ170160246744QQcmdZViewItem

Fans of blues piano would love these:

Earl Hines & Jimmy Rushing- Blues and Things recorded by Rudy Von Gelder in '66 is great blues session.

Piano Blues CD and DVD, a film by Clint Eastwood, from the collection of Blues films by Scorsese including Allman Bros, Clapton, Hendrix, BB, Taj, Keb, Stevie Ray etc.

Also recommended to everyone who likes the blues piano:

Jay McShann- Still Jumpin' The Blues with the Duke Robiland Band and Maria Muldaur.
I had the pleasure of hanging out one time with Jay McShann. He was a fun, charming guy. I have many of his albums on vinyl and 15 of them on cd!

Then I guess you have to move on to Gene Harris

I have not heard his new one but it got great reviews. My most recent one is the one with Bill Charlap. Nice

Charlap and Scott Hamilton's- Back in New York from '05. I must have played that 100 times!

Gene Harris with Scott Hamilton, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown!!!!!!!

Phil Woods with Jay McShann, Flip Phillips and Fathead Newman-

David Newman- I Remember Brother Ray, with vibist Steve Nelson.

Here is one from my "ALL TIME BEST ALBUM" list:
Roy Haynes- Out of the Afternoon, with Roland Kirk, horns and Tommy Flannigan, piano!!!!!!!
What can you say?

A fun blues piano/guitar album-
Tiny Grimes- Some Groovy Fours with Lloyd Glen and Jay McShann piano

Speaking of Roy Haynes how 'bout "When it's Haynes it Roars"

Seattle...records

Jive Time Records...love 'em, $1 dollar bins are great.

The Landing - family owned and operated.

Ofcourse Bud's Jazz records.

My Dad used to say that Fatha Hines had no business living as long as he did (laughing ofcourse)...that was a man who loved a good time. The Ole man used to say that Hines was the foulest talkin' man you'd ever want to meet, then Pops would do his Fatha Hines impression.

"When it's Haynes it Roars" Thanks, I will look for that.

You notice that every pic of Hines he has that big grin going.
I know the Landing, same block as Hawthorne and Magnolia HiFi.
I bought a lot of used cd's there. They have Naim for demo but I can never get them to turn it up.
And Bud's. Great place but the parking is a challenge. I can try to combine it with our shopping trip to China town, and visit to the best restaurant in Seattle, really-The Tamarind Tree, 12th and Jackson.
Too bad it is such a short trip. It hit -40 below this week!
The problem is, my wife can't get any more vacation time because of her new job. I don't need vacation. I just quit any time I feel like it. Getting very good at that.

Pick-up and retreival to be arranged. Could be for 3 mos-1 year, but the Classe must be used on a regular basis and enjoyed to no end.
Many speakers, multiple Classe amps, the works, TT to be handled with care or carefrully stored.

James Taylor (live).
This cd is recorded so well, but overlooked with the plethoria of JT stuff out there.
Fabulous top drawer recording of a super group.
Trak 4 'Your Smiling Face' is in my top 10, easing into the top 5 with another play at exciting volumes.
Don't miss this cd, kids.
JT's 'live at the Beacon' is another goodie, but this (live) should not be overlooked, it just cooks.
Very fast, very live.
Jan, you might even like it.

I hope you got everything all straightened out Nuck. I'd help if I could, but logistics prevent it. Best of luck.

No tunes here for a while. I'm separated from my music by nearly 3000 miles for the holidays. Even Monster Cables won't stretch that far.

Rush - Grace Under Pressure vinyl

Pink Floyd - Animals vinyl / Japanese Import

I finally had to reach back and grab something that I absolutely love to listen to. It's been a while since I last spun it and I am actually not even sure that I ever just "listened" to this LP. Pigs on this LP was (is) my standard for testing any modifications to my set up. There is one advantage to having some time pass between changes in my system, as I become more acclimated to the sound, everything I re-listen to sounds so much better than the last time.

Tierney Sutton - Blue in Green

About to receive guests who hate music.....yuck.

Actually I'm not sure they hate it they just tend to Yack on about inane BS while good music plays, when they would be better off with their mouths shut and their ears open...oops did I vent...sorry.

I have 4 Tierney albums but not that one.
And 1 Sophie and not that one so I guess we don't have all the same music.

One of my sisters turns the music down every chance she gets. So low that you can't even hear it. I get so annoyed and ask why she doesn't just turn it off.
And one brother who does immediately turns the music off, and puts on a game. What is wrong with music during a game?

I am going to dinner where they don't even have a hifi. Well they have a cheap turntable, radio combo that sounds terrible.
Oh well, as long as there is booze!

They are actually here today (in town) but too sick to visit and their doctor is in Seattle, insurance forces them back to Seattle...Carlos (daughters SO) has no insurance so he needs to go to the clinic in Seattle...ain't American health care grand...don't get me started.

Oooohhh what a night!!!!!!

1st - Great Divide Brewing Company
Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout

Not that I am a fan of stouts, but there is no way a 100 point beer can disappoint.

I found out my dealer provides complimentary tune ups for my Linn Sondek LP12, once a year, as long as you bought the table from them. I just got it back with another new stylus. For now on I will have Jan install the stylus for me. clipart{blush}

All vinyl night;
Pink Floyd - Animals
Yes I know I just spun it a couple of days ago, but how else am I going to measure the difference of the tune up and new stylus?

Living Stereo - Greig Music from Peer Gynt
Fiedler * Boston Pops * Eileen Farrell

Stan Getz - w/ Erroll Garner, Sonny Criss, and Buddy Collette
This is where I figured out that I had to take my Ringmat 330 MKII off of the TT and put back the original felt mat that TT came with. The trebles were too piercing with the tuned up TT. The felt mat still gives me the detail but at non-fatiguing presentations. I still left my cork clamp in place as it maintains the tightness of the notes better. I do not doubt that I will hear some recordings as being somewhat dull to which I will then swap in the Ringmat for.

Wasn't it our government who agreed that this whole HMO thing was good for the country (business I mean)

Back on topic;

Remnants from the original Nuck and Mike Excellent Adventure;

Jefferson Starship - 2400 Fulton Street Double LP
from the private stash of our dealer friend in Downers Grove, Il.

This LP is dead quiet, the vocals are warm throughout. Starship is not in my top 10 but this is an outstanding recording!
