Well the HSU is no doubt going to be a better speaker, but it's also over 3 times the price. Just depends on what you want to spend.

The HSU is going to set me back $250 for a pair.

What are some competitors in the price range ?

They sort of resemble the klipsch bookshelves at bestbuy and wonder how they compare to those.

Ive narrowed it down to the HB-1's and Klipsch B-3 bookshelf speakers.

Is it worth the extra money to get the Klipsch B-3's ?

Mostly listen to hiphop and dance.

no, but I do know they manufacture speakers in that price range.

Art (I believe) has heard them, and was less than impressed.

Don't know how many people have listened to the Hsu (particularly people with your taste in music), so it would be hard to make a comparison. However, if it makes you feel a little better, the B3 is on sale currently, and shipping will drive up the price of the Hsu.

If you are looking at the Klipsch B-3, also take a look at these speakers as well...

http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/Intimus-532-LR-Bookshelf-Speaker,5,20,5.aspx

Athena Technologies (bookshelves, can't remember the number)
Paradigm Mini monitors
Paradigm Focus
PSB bookshelves
Klipsch B-3
Klipsch Reference RB-10
Klipsch Reference RB-51

Listen to as many speakers as you can. Heck, even Bose if you want, just to get an idea of what you are really looking for. There are many, many speakers in this price range. I have listed off a few. Some are slightly lower than your price point, and some are slightly higher.

I listen to some hip-hop and dance. Well, I really listen to just about everything. I myself prefer the presentations the Paradigms give to that of the Klipsch. The Paradigm Focus and MiniMonitor have bass low enough to get you by without a sub for the time being, but the Klipsch will play louder.

I hate to say it, but take a look at the Bose 301 as well. You might find that they fit your needs better. They are not my favorite speaker in the bunch, but some people like the sound.

first off...what are you driving them with? If you have a bright receiver, those klipsch will drill your ears out.

I would not match Klipsch with:

Onkyo
Sony
Yamaha
Sony ES

They IMHO sound great with Pioneer and Pioneer Elite. The warm sound compliments the added brightness from the speaker.

Very long time. I work alot in car sales. Plus the stores around my area dont have many options to demo the brands we talk about.

Thanks Stephen.

H/K should be fine, but I admit that I usually like a slightly warmer sound, so what sounds good to me might not sound good to others.

You should be able to demo the Klipsch Reference line at Best Buy as well in their Magnolia section. It won't hurt anything to see if the difference is worth the money to you. Besides, you might be able to score a better price if you ask.

That is why I threw in the Bose 301's. One thing they do well IMHO is dance music. The multipolar design throws a huge sound. The other multipolar speakers in that price are usually sats.

Stephen, I think that only the magnolia section of BB has Klipsch Reference.

Yes only Magnolia Section has the Reference line.

I will try to listen to both of them.

Im going to be mating the bookshelves with a HSU-VTF-2 mk 2 or 3 and if it doenst make much of a differance in sound then the STF-2

For your use, I would go with the STF. The VTF is designed for both home theater and music, hence the option to choose from deep, less powerful bass to slightly less deep, but more powerful bass.

In your shoes I'd save the money and stick with the STF.
