Contemporary Noise Quintet - Pig Inside the Gentleman Not really slow jazz or anything. It's almost a mix of post-rock, jazz, and soundtrack music for movies. http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=28778 A bit of reading for anyone interested. http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/jazzdownload.php?id=3260 Here is a download to Million Faces from the album. The album is further described as... "'Pig inside the Gentleman' continues on poetical path established by 1960s Polish Jazz classics like Krzysztof Komeda and Andrzej Kurylewicz. Strong and ferocious sound but at the same time with uplifting and inspiring film music-like themes. " I thought some folks may be interested by the comparison to Krzysztof Komeda, as his album (Astigmatic) is excellent. And I'm sure many more of his albums are too :D |

I'm not sure if any of my recommendations will stick with anyone. I seem to be on the outside of a lot of people's tastes here. Never really been a huge classical or straight jazz fan. I do love a lot of jazz records, but kind of the ones infused with other styles. |

Melody Gardot - My One and Only Thrill Very nice album...she has her own sound but kind of reminds me of a cross between Norah Jones and Madeleine Peyroux. Melody, Madeleine, Norah and Lizz Wright are my favorite female vocalists in popular music... |

Going to bed to Scottish post-rock group The Twilight Sad's Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters. Saw them open for Mogwai back in May and they were really great live. Going to see if the Evos do them justice. |

Going back a couple of weeks to a comment Kirk made about the Camarillo Brillo... Zappa - Over-nite Sensation on vinyl. Frank new what sound he was after. And I dig. I think he was very much against drum machines, Kirk. In fact, he annotates Terry Bozio's drum solo, Hands With A Hammer, on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol 3..... "This drum solo is one of Terry's more dramatic efforts. With all the freeze-dried drum sounds heard on records today, this ambient 4-track recording of real drums, well tuned, played with real skill serves as a historic document. There is a whole generation of listeners out there who have never heard what real drums are supposed to sound like." |

Sophie Milman - Make Someone Happy This young Canadian lass has an absolutely wonderful smooth soothing voice. I'd recommend to anyone looking for some eashy listening jazz. Check her out on Amazon.com. I was recnetly able to hear her live and get her autograph on her latest CD. |

Zappa selects everything in his music I think. It was an amazing drum sound, on that record as a whole even. I've always loved these kinds of records with that really tight drum sound. Dynamics maybe? I'm not entirely sure about musical theory, I just haven't heard many albums with that sound. |

The Rippingtons - Modern Art Why do many bands of this genre sound the same? This cd sounds like a very mild dose of Spyro Gyra. It's a sleeper! Nice, but uninteresting. M - 3.5 S - 4.3 |

Playing some catch up for past days of listening; Elvis Costello - Secret, Profane & Sugarcane CD Not particularly enamored with the Country / Bluegrass theme that this material brings. Nothing against either, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is one my my favorites, just not exciting to me. M - 3.3 S - 4.0 Chickenfoot CD True to the Van Halen style. One that you cannot possibly get the volume up loud enough for. Nice ride! M - 4.3 S - 3.8 |

I have a few previous albums to post but I will start with this one, a little treasure I found at Beverly Records on my recent trip back to Chicago; Blossom Dearie - Once Upon A Summertime Verve MG V-2111 Recorded in New York on September 12-13, 1958 Blossom Dearie - Vocals / Piano Mundell Lowe - Guitar Ray Brown - Bass Ed Thigpen - Drums Original LP The vocals on this album are wonderful. The change of pace amongst the songs and of some of the songs is engaging. Whether the vocals are in French or English they are well delivered and unique in her own style. This particular album and cover are in rough shape but it will still be sitting on my "Reference Music" shelf. M - 4.8 S - 4.5 |

Just unsealed a 180 Gram vinyl copy of; John Cale and Terry Riley - Church of Anthrax 1970 Most unusual, I despised side 1 and loved side 2. Side 1; It is like they either took too much artistic license, tried to do to much with it, or found a style beyond a jazz genre I am familiar with. Sax and organ floating back and forth over piano just doesn't do it for me. Side 2, the first cut is the only song with vocals on the album and very tuneful and nice to listen to. The second song, their interpretation of Ides of March was upbeat and spirited, progressive in its format, a truly good jam. Riley's piano is out of the left speaker and Cale's is out of the right speaker in this one. M - 3.5 S - 4.75 |

I picked up the aforementioned Cale LP along with these at Holm Audio, in Downers Grove Ill. Dead Can Dance - "Mr. Lovegrove's Dance" 2005 Picture Disc LP Live recording of some of their best songs. Recording quality less than average as it was bass heavy. M - 3.5 S - 2.8 T-Bone Burnett - The Talking Animals vinyl I thought I was buying something else when I grabbed this. I guess his producing the latest Elvis Costello release had stuck T-Bone's name in my head. I don't know about the religious underpinnings of the vocals on this album but I do know that the music was unique in its style, Rockabilly? not sure, but if I knew that he had other releases like this one I would buy them. M - 4.4 S - 4.0 Patricia Barber - Spit vinyl This too will find a place in my "Reference Music" shelves. I own one other LP by her and this one is nothing like that. This is pure light jazz with no messing around. Barber's vocals are so pure and direct on this record that I was able to fine tune my room to her. On the cut "Greys' she hits some peaks that were coming across a bit strident. I adjusted my corner bass traps a few degrees in, though counter intuitive, and the vocals smoothed out to a strong but mellow presentation. M - 4.9 S - 4.75 John Denver's Greatest Hits vinyl M - 4.8 S - 4.2 k.d.land - Shadowland vinyl An early country style, low keyed approach by lang on this effort. She had Owen Bradley produce it and their efforts make for an album that is well worth listening to, country or lang fan. M - 4.5 S - 4.0 Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy vinyl They're playing live at Billy Bob's in Ft. Worth next Saturday. |

THE BILLY BOBS? lol Steve Winwood...Roll with it. Very hoppy, lots of bass in the right places. Lightweight stuff from a better performer, but the stuff is earworm material. Exceptional pace and jump on this recording, it sould come with a little packet of Maxwell house or brownstone. Dance all night long, it's just a groove! M 4.5 S 4.8 |

Ernestine Anderson - A song for You (Highnote) Ernestine was close to eighty years of age when she recorded this. Though there's a hint of those years in her great voice, she still gives a strong performance on this bluesy jazz album. M - 4.3 S - 4.5 Melissa Morgan - Until I met You (Telarc) A refreshing new voice in popular Jazz - a hint of Eartha Kitt? M - 4.75 S - 4.85 Susie Arioli Swing Band - It's Wonderful (Justin Time) A delightful Canadian jazz singer complimented by a gifted guitarist, Jordan Officer. 30's and 40's standards that, if they don't get your toes tapping then there's probably a black hearse on its way to pick you up. M - 4.85 S - 4.85 Joe Bonamassa - The Ballad of John Henry (J & R Adventures) This is my third and favourite album of his (after one listen) - All I can say is this guy is amazing. If you like blues/rock and Blues pick this one up. Great voice, outstanding licks! M - 4.85 S - 4.85 |

Again, Eric Clapton's 24 nights. 2 cd set, live at Royal Albert Hall(the place loves that guy). Very well balanced in sound between tones and song selection, be it Blues, jump or Sonata, this recording never sent me for the VC.Nice! I am not allowing myself to believe that this is all live, because the audience has been mic'd out, just the band, tyvm. There is some crowd sound at points, but that has been added at will, I think. At any rate, you will not get the loud song ending of having your head ripped off and blowing tweeters with over-gained crowd primal screams of wanton abandon. I suggest that you all seek out the title, under Reprise label, W226420 M 4.3 S 4.8 |

Neil - I also find that Missing qualifies as reference. M.R. - Joe B. I had forgotten about him. I discovered him right after B.B. King raised his "relevance". Both the Ballad of John Henry and Nightclub (Barber) are solidly on my radar. I haven't forgot about Hurt either. |

Santana - Moonflower LP Wow! Slam, attack, progressions, regressions, live out of this world surreal music. Listening to this double LP was akin to being on the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago during the evening rush hour in a vehicle with the gas pedal stuck. I love it when the music leaves you breathless. Diana Krall - Live In Rio BluRay Though in DTS Master Audio, the gain was a bit low so a little more volume than usual was required, however the sound quality was very good and suited the music. She looked gorgeous. The casual rooftop jam (bonus material) among guests was worth a look and listen also. M - 4.85 S - 4.65 V - 4.00 Miles Davis - The Complete Birth Of Cool A 1998 reissue from Capitol Jazz M - 4.25 S - 4.00 (+) in consideration of original recording dates. Davre Brubeck Quartet - Time Out (1997 reissue) I think just about everyone would have this 1959 album either on LP, CD or both. One of the highest selling Jazz recordings ever. Take Five, initially written for a drum solo became a worldwide hit. M - 4.30 S - 4.25 |

Nice titles M.R. I have that Diana Krall B-R on my list, nearing the top. It's not everday that you find a beautiful face to complement such a beautiful voice. I don't yet have any music on B-R, so this will be a real treat. Pat Metheny - Letter From Home (on the iPod to work). |

JJ Cale - Naturally on vinyl Recorded in 1970 & '71 this album is still relevant. I was very fortunate to see Cale play at a small club in Manhattan about 5 years ago.....the guy is the definition of Laid Back and don't tour much. But he sure can play. Any Mark Knopfler fan out there should also have some JJ Cale. |

Duke Ellington Meet Coleman Hawkins - this is one sweet sounding CD. Listening on my Grado SR80's and quite happy. |

CM, I don't see a pair in your vast inventory of headphones. Yes, they are lovely...a huge step up from my Skull Candy - Ink'd earbuds. Never knew music could sound so good through headphones till I got my Grado's...someday a real headphone amp. |

I own a pair of Alessandro Music Series One (MS-1) http://www.alessandro-products.com/headphones.html which are manufactured by Grado Labs. I believe they are "tweaked" to be a more neutral-sounding SR80. I absolutely love them, and they are perhaps the best piece of equipment in my arsenal, and they only cost $99! The MS-1 and my Marantz SR5400 make for a spectacular team. The Marantz has a very seriously good headphone section. |
