I have a 40-watt 8-ohm stereo amp/receiver from the early 80's. I kept it and the speakers it came with in my attic for about 10-15 years, and this year I took them out again only to find that the foam around the speakers had disintegrated. I am going to buy some 8" OEM speakers to replace them, but the new ones are rated at 120 watts - 8 ohms. Can my amp handle it? |

Mark, new speakers will serve you better than replacement parts for old speakers. |

The receiver may not function either, have you tried it? I hope not, it needs to be cleaned first. Theese things do not like extended periods of storage in an attic. |

No, I tested the speakers with the system in my living room. I was hoping to save a little money by just buying the replacement woofers and keeping the enclosures. |

Then buy them. Replacing 20 yr old drivers with unmatched modern drivers will drive the receiver, the enclosures and your ears, nuts. |

Although it won't sound very good, if you attach the old speakers as they are to the unit, they should still generate some sound. At least you can tell if the electronics are working! Regards, Frank. |
