My wife and I run a restaurant where we're running our CD carousel 15 hours a day, six days a week. Perhaps not surprisingly, we've gone thru 3 units in 3 years... either they stop shuffling, or stop rotating, or whatever... we've had Onkyo's and Sony's (okay, stop snickering)
Is there a high build-quality CD carousel out there? We're happy with the sound quality we've had, but we'd like to avoid the mechanical breakdowns. |

Try satellite radio like XM or Sirius. Changers break that's their nature. Whether it's Marantz (one of the best sounding changers) or Onkyo (snicker) they just won't hold up to 15 hrs per day 6 days a week. Good luck. |

a couple of things
it seems like one get's their money's worth playing a cd changer 15 hours a day six days a week,so what if you have to buy a new one each year?
art-how do you rank the denon DCM 290 with regards cd carousel,i just bought one.what carousel's do you recommend??? |

The Marantz sounds the best of any I've heard.

vs XM at 12.95 per mo.....

Your system sounds like a fine budget system but I would still guess that the Denon is the weak link. Personally I don't like changers and believe that the Cambridge that matches your amp would be a big improvement. In the end it's up to if you like the sound. I have not heard that paticular Denon so perhaps it's better than I think. |

would get the cambridge 640c(v2)but dang on days like today nothing like hearing hours of music without any interuption. |

i have sat radio,but for howard sports bbc etc not music.
i am not the restaurant guy.
BTW i like the PSB's as well.
is there any carousel cd player that meets the exacting standards of the tweekers on this thread??

Except for the CC4300 or the latest version. 
Even though I have recently sold mine on Ebay, I can attest that it is a fairly decent player considering it's a 5 disc changer. And disc changers do have their benefits, though they do have more convoluted transport systems etc so there is more things to wear or go wrong. And to provide those features in a player costing the same or less than a decent single disc player some sacrifices are sure to be inclusive of the price.
But a pc based source?
Never!

MR, the source(as a transport) is quite good in the 3340, I think.
As a source for a DAC, the Marantz is a little weak in the power supply.
I get the point.Skol!
Possibilities are A: difficult to type twice.
B:maybe the byproduct of nature's gift to Liberals.
C: a byproduct of listening to 'uneasy rider' from Charlie Daniels.

Still here, just reading and absorbing. Sounds like a year of that kind of work is about all I can expect out of a carousel. I'll give some serious thought to the PC-based source or other non-CD based system; the CDs work nicely now because it's a student coffeehouse and the student employees can bring in their own stuff...
But thanks for the reality check on the carousel! |
