I just purchased a RCA STAV 3880 second hand. When I plugged it in and hit the source button it came on for about 5 seconds, soon after the receiver's display, "POWER OFF" flashed for about another 5 seconds before shutting down completely.

I have not wired it to any speakers or attached to anything else.

I was hoping it may be a simple problem or part to replace.

Can anyone help me out before I waste more time and money.

its probably the protection circuit, or it could be as simple as a fuse, check all the fuses, and then check the power supply to make sure its holding the proper volts. and if all thats fine than the problem will be within the protection circuit.
