It works okay for me, though the speaker is the Jamo R 909 if you want to Google it.

Reminds me a little of the Linkwitz Orion. It is indeed an interesting idea, albeit a bit pricey, considering they don't even have to fabricate a box!

Seems like a good idea to avoid box colourations. Pricey indeed but more to spend where it counts more methinks.

Nothin' new, but I think you mean "no box" thinking.

and the aforementioned Orion.

Dipole speakers tend to be highly directional helping avoid some room problems. The commercial offerings usually have very expensive drivers designed to work in free air to deal with the loss of acoustical suspension and electronic EQ to help the bass response.

Thanks for those links - I'd never seen these designs previously. I read somewhere that it takes a fairly powerful amp to work those R 909's so I suppose that applies to others of similar design considering your comments on the drivers.

Dipoles aren't typically power hogs but it depends on the drivers used, of course, and how much equalization is applied. The R 909 is reported to have sensitivity of 89db and 4 ohm nominal impedance which isn't too bad. You can be fairly confident the impedance will dip under 4 ohms so a stout power supply would definitely be in order.
