Do I NEED a special subwoofer cable? I have just a normal bookshelf stereo system (not some super surround sound deal) and I want to know how much quality I would give up using plain old component cable.

No, there's nothing special about a "subwoofer cable". If you have a spare RCA cable, why not just try it out?

Can a (active) subwoofer cable be cut/modified to connect to a passive 2-wire (subwoofer) connection ?
