I bought a Monster Cable device that plugs into the headphone miniplug on my Dell laptop. The other end is RCA connectors that I attached to my "AUX" inputs on my home stereo amp.

Problem: lots of noise, sounds like the computer drive or fan being picked up along with the music.

Friends keep telling me I can do this but how? Do I need some kind of filter added to the chain?
