I took a little speaker from an old curtis portable TV. Would it be safe to hook this speaker up to a headphone jack and then into my ipod. Would this be dangerous in that it would pull to many amps from my portable.

I wouldn't reccomend trying that. A headset usually has a really high impedence, and if you try that with a speaker that has a lower impedence than your headset draws, it MAY damage the amp in your iPod.

I would look into an iPod specific speaker system, or even a set of computer speakers.

for $99 klipsch has a nice 2.0 set that sounds better than it has a right to.
