It would be far easier for you to simply place both terms in a search engine. If you would prefer to have answers supplied by us: http://www.enjoythemusic.com/audioterminology.htm#S http://www.cardinalproaudio.com/main/terms.htm http://eli47.tripod.com/audiogloss.html http://diyaudiocorner.tripod.com/def.htm http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/resist.htm http://harada-sound.com/sound/handbook/defa-d.html http://www.stereophile.com/reference/50/index.html

Basically a preamp amplifies low level signals from cd players, tuners, dvd players, video sources, phonographs, etc. to a level that allows an amplifier to power your speakers. It also acts as a switching system for your various sources. There are various degrees of sophistication with preamps, from extremely basic to full-blown AV surround with all the bells and whistles. |

The pre-amp is the heart of the system. all of the arrangement of inputs is done here, just to send a signal out to the amp. The pre/processor is the life of the system. Spend money there. |

Well, Golly, Dave, you didn't ask. Most of my opinopns are not backed up with lisrening experience, so I have weened off a tad. Opinions are like heartbeats, nobody cares till they stop, then the cards arrive.

I thought it might be carts as in carrying dead body away. But, on the amp and pre/pro side, I am converted after the weekend with Outlaw's 970 mated to my Adcom 7607, very nice and now I know why they call it surrround sound and why all you guys told me to get a coaxial cable. You know, the sound does really move around the room in some movies? LOL |
