I want to use some older shelf speakers from a surround sound system I have to play my iPod through. I stripped the red and black wires from the speaker boxes and just crimped them to the back of a 3.5 mini plug for a check and it when connected to the output on top of my iPod it plays fine... is there anything I am missing? Will this mess up my speakers or iPod? Can I just clean up the wiring and use it as I have it?

yo can blow out the pre-amp inside the ipod. you need an amplifier to drive those speakers. For sure it seems to work fine now, but if you use a lot, you can mess your ipod

It will work, probably won't be loud and drain the battery of the Ipod in no time at all. The 3.5 mini plug is not intented for such an application.
