placing your speekers on spikes is something i just heard about and never thought of before so i looked up speeker spikes online an foung that they come in many different shapes and sizes. what i want to know it how do they help the sound , what types of floores can they be used on and what shape/size of spike should i use?

its usually used for carpeted floors or if you are placing the speakers on soft materials

I did a quick test to see if this tecniq realy works. what i did is took a piece of thick cardbord and put some pinty scrus through it at the corners then set my speekers on them and lust from this hack job i noticed a substantal improvement in the sound |

what you are doing there is just anchoring the speakers to the concrete floor, that is, going through the carpet via spikes. What you want to happen is keep the speakers from unnecessary vibration due to its own inherent function. The only thing you want vibrating are the drivers and keep these vibrations from transferring to the speaker enclosure itself sometimes colouring the sound. Placing the speakers directly on carpet makes the enclosure unstable and wobbles unnecessarily, using spikes will stabilize the enclosures. Experiment, evaluate, listen...smile and enjoy if you get there!

Spikes also enables one to level their speakers if you have an unlevel subfloor. |

Berny is definitely on the right track. To contol internal vibrations, and channel them from the speakers, the material of choice is brass. Brass iso-cones will control the vibrations. They make them in carpet piercing models for stability as well. I use brass isolaton cones under all my components. The best ones I have found are from Mapleshade Records @ www.mapleshaderecords.com. They are solid brass and massive. I recommend them without question. Cheers! |
