My Yamaha HTR-5830 keeps shutting down. I've checked the speaker connections and they're OK. I'm assuming it's overheating. I had an x-Box unit sitting atop of it that I have since moved. How long does the unit take to cool off and can be started again. It's been 3 hours, it feels cool to the touch but does not turn on. Any thoughts?

yes... you shouldn't obstruct either the top or bottom of any reciever or amp. the vents are there for circulation and cooling.

you probably triggered a thermal shutdown circuit. cranking the volume up for long periods of time could do the same thing too.

if it still doesn't turn on, you might have blown a fuse.
