I was interested in this pre-amp - however it says that it is for MM or MC cartridges - would it be safe to use a moving iron cartridge like a stanton hifi? Or not possible.

Yes, though the way the vibration of the stylus and subsequent movement of the cantilever is handled between moving magnet and moving iron are somewhat different, the mi cartridge is usually classified with the mm in terms of voltage output and resistive loading.
