i am wondering if most people still feel that the outlaw audio 950 prepro is the least expensive prepro that is still very good. i'm considering getting rid of my reciever and picking up a prepro but don't want to spend a lot but still get good quality. also does anyone know anything about the insides of this thing dac's and what not? i want 7.1 and prologicII along with ex and es. i have several different amps i can use just want to know about the prepro. all my amps are standard rca conn's not balanced. |

Kegger, Outlaw is only available in US and Canada as far as I know. I have no experience. I read only good things about Outlaw on this forum. If you run "search" I think you will find favourable comments by a lot of well informed people here. |

i have seen people post on this unit in the past but haven't seen any lately. trying to see if there is anything else like this unit. and if anyone knows anything about the dac's or other internals on this unit. or if opinions may have changed now that this unit has been out for awhile. but it seems that there is not much action in the preamp area.(i may try posting in the amp section)

Cirrus makes the DAC's for this unit and they are very good, particularly at this price point. The money spent on this unit is on the internals. It isn't the most beautiful preamp, just the best at under $1,000 by a comfortable margin. Even the remote appears to be the same as used by the B&K $3,000 receiver. Now I doubt that this AV preamp is capable of much, if any, upgrading. But what it does, it does incredibly well. Quiet, clean, and efficient. It has all the popular formats, except Dolby Prologic IIx, since that is from a very recent vintage (and is really only somewhat important if you want to play a 7.1 system in the Dolby matrixed sound mix). The unit is still capable of reproducing 7.1. The only other sincere competition comes from Adcom and the cheapest Adcom might be the GTP-830 and it can be bought at a little over $900. But it has inferior DAC's 24/96K compared to the Outlaw's 24/192K's from Cirrus. Also the Outlaw has component video switching circuit bandwidth of around 50mHz. You'd have to go more upscale in the Adcom line to get this kind of performance.

thanks for the info gregory i was hoping opinions on this unit hadn't changed. it just seemed like it had been out there for awhile that something nicer might have surpassed it. looks like this should be what i get. |

have the rotel and b&k become the new bang for the buck prepro's? you can get a rotel 1066 or b&k ref 30 for about $1000 anymore out there worth considering new or used? still needs to be 7.1,prologic II and other formats (d.d ex,dts es descrete) analog inputs for sacd/dvd-audio preferably 7.1 not just 5.1! (I mean inputs only, I know sacd and dvd-a are 5.1) but some units have 7.1 inputs
