as my girlfriend is complaining, i am debating what to do. bookshelf speakers mounted vs. bookshelf speakers on stands. she'd prefer them on the floor, beneath the stereo, out of the way. i'd prefer them on stands. will i lose much in having them mounted at ear level? is this a good compromise?

With wall mounts you are stuck with the sound. With bookshelfs, on or off stands, you can move them around to get the best sonic performance to suit your ears.

If you put them on the floor, see if you can tilt them up in front so they face your listening position. On-axis freq response is always better than off-axis. Also, keep in mind that you will emphasize the bass with them on the floor.
