My room is currently wired for a 6.1 speaker configuration.

I am considering purchasing a receiver which happens to be a 7.1

Will a 7.1 receiver support a 6.1 speaker configuration?

Yes. Just plug one surround back speaker and setup your receiver to 6.1. It will work just like a 6.1 receiver.
