Hello,
I've purchased a project debut II turntable. I've plugged it straight into my Cambridge Audio amp. But it's very quiet - I have to turn the sound right up to here any thing, and it lacks any kind of bass.
Am I being stupid here? Do I need a pre-amp, or should have bought the project debut phono? Or is it some other problem?

Phono outputs are much lower than direct line level outputs which prevail in all other audio components. If you are plugging your turntable into an aux or line input on your amplifier, it will amplify the low level output but it will never get loud - it will always sound like its on mute, even when the sound is cranked to 11. If your amplifier does not have a phono input, you will need a phono preamplifier. They range in price and effectiveness from $20 and crackly on up to the hundreds and perfect.

I believe Cambridge Audio sells the phono stage for their integrated amps separately. It is a plug-in type mini circuit board that will simply snap in, but you have to buy it. If you are uncomfortable with doing it yourself, your cambridge dealer can do it.
You did not specify which Cambridge amp you have, but I have seen the board meant for the A300/A500 series amps priced at $60. Here is a link to that board FYI:

If, however, you have the newer Azur line of amp, then you will neeed to check with your Cambridge dealer as I do not believe the PPM01 board will fit that amp.
Alternatively, if you do not want to install the on-board phono circuit board, you will need an outboard phono pre-amp which will also boost your signal and equalize it for amplification by the Cambridge amp. There are many very fine units out there, but I like the Sumiko Pro-Ject Phono Box as a particularly good value. Here is alink to some very fine phono pre-amps:

If you have just purchased and it is not what you want, consider swapping it for the Pro-Ject Debut with phono pre-amp.
