Recommendations please on 5.1 or 7.1 speaker systems in the $500 price range. I am going to build around a $500 range receiver. |

You could go for Ascend CBM-170s across the front and HTM-200 rears and pick up a HK 235 or a Denon 1905 from some place like this on eBay and you're around your $1000 price point. The system will sound better than any HT in the box. BUT, I'm a fairly newbie myself so listen and learn. (You might see if you can preview the Ascends close to home, also) or anything else recommended by others. Good luck

Do you already have the receiver? If not, maybe spend less on it and more on speakers? |

Nah... Forget that. Decreasing by $100 might make a big difference on the receiver but not much of a dent towards better speakers. Something to consider anyway... |
