Hi,

I am very new to the world of hifi and was doing some reading before I bought a new system - I read that micro and mini systems can NEVER sound as good as even basic component systems - is that true? I like to listen to a range of music (metal/classical/pop) most of which I have converted into MP3. Which is the best system (micro/mini/seperates) for under £500? It will be great if it can play mp3 as well and load multiple CDs.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
T George

PS: I have posted this in the CD Players section as well as I was not sure where it should go.

The Denon mission system sounds good - got the recommendations from the pros at www.hifichoice.co.uk

I can have one shipped to you for $299 - refurbished - originally $700 if you are in US.

You are lucky to be in a nation that is home to many goooood Hifi products - you should be able to find good ones on ebay.uk

I see many possibilities -

These 2 were the original offerings from the manufacturer and sound quite good.

Some like to upgrade to better speakers however - something like these or other mission speakers :

It has a pretty good sound - metallic and clear. However, Denon-mission system sounds much better to me - the sound is non-fatiguing. One can listen for hours without getting tired of the sound.

The CD740 is little tiny sounding - since the speakers are mounted on to the system. On Denon system, you can spread the speakers wide - and play around with speaker placement.

If you are looking for a really compact all in one system, CD740 sounds as good as more costlier Bose - Cambridge sound was awarded the best speaker value in US in a stereo-review magazine.

But it isn't Denon-mission system. Denon is more powerful, and the speakers have a bit of refined quality - so you can listen for hours without tiring of them...

and they look classy as well.

The upper model has a more powerful amp - 10 watts more per channel, and supports 3 CDs.

On hifi-choice magazine, The Denon-Mission got 4 stars, while this next one got 5 - for more money.

I have the Denon one, and sounds pretty good - especially if you align the height of the speakers to your ears.

Cheers,

James

The Linn one costs much more, but is a good one from a famous British audio company.
