i have a sony strde-925 receiver which says 110w per channel (not sure if rms or max) and there are 2 setting at the back ie 4 or 8 ohms for speakers. all 5 of my speakers (wharfedale diamond 8.1 (x2), 8.4 (x2), & center (x1) are rated at 6 ohms with recommended amp power at 120 w rms for speakers except for the 8.4 which 150 w rms. which setting shld i use for my receiver? and is my reveiver under-powered since my speakers sensitivity is only 86db/w/1m ? |

technically you should set the receiver to 4 ohms, since the impedance of at least one of the speakers is below 8 ohms. However, I have 4 ohm nominal speakers and have my onkyo tx-sr800 set at 8. Switching to 4 ohms lowers the rail voltage on the amplifier, not a big deal really until you crank it up. I could here a noticable difference between the 8/4 ohm setting on my receiver at higher volumes, but it was indistinguishable at moderate leves. Leaving at 8 ohms will cause the receiver to get warmer, so make sure you have plenty of room for proper ventilation. |
