Put simply, the term refers to how well the sound fills your room. When it comes to creating a soundstage and filling your room with sound, speakers are not created as equals and can be 'night/day' different from one another. Also, a speaker thats well matched for one room, might be terrible for another. Small speakers and large listening areas usually make for a poor combo. |

Maybe Paul was imprecise or maybe I disagree. Soundstage, for me, isn't how sound fills the whole, but how well the speakers' sound images into a "stage" with different instruments that are localized in certain areas in front of you.

I usually see the word "soundstage" used according to Peter's definition. http://www.audiovideo101.com/dictionary/dictionary_cat.asp?catid=16 Soundstage: The perceived width, depth and height of recorded sound played back over an audio system; the setting similar to a theater stage from which sounds seem to emanate when reproduced through an audio system (see Imaging). |

The below is from Stereophile's Audio Glossary http://www.integracoustics.com/MUG/MUG/bbs/stereophile_audio-glossary.html soundstaging, soundstage presentation: The accuracy with which a reproducing system conveys audible information about the size, shape, and acoustical characteristics of the original recording space and the placement of the performers within it. soundstage shift: Apparent lateral movement of the soundstage when listening from either side of the sweet spot. |

Peter has it right. Imagine sitting in front of a stage where a live performance is taking place. You can see and hear where the various instruments are located, especially in an orchestra or accoustic performance. Good speakers reproduce this experience (at least in the audio context). |
