Ok, so this will show my A/V ignorance but anyway. What are pre-outs and what do they do? When would you use them?

pre outs are used when you are going to be using dedicated amps. i believe this bypasses the reciever's speaker connectors. if you have an amp that you want to use with the system, you hook up the amp to the pre outs.
