When using 4- conductor wire, there's 4 different colors on wire. Which 2 are the postives and which are the negatives? Thanks. |

Does anybody know anything about 4-conductor wire? I'm trying to find out which of the 4 wires are the positives. The 4 colors are Red, Black, Green and White. Thanks guys? |

There are no hard and fast rules for four conductor cables. Typically you use contrasting colors as the two poles of + & -. Red is most often used for the right channel +. More often than not people will associate black with ground (-). That arrangement makes the green conductor a ground which is not the convention an electrician expects. Unless you are wiring a system where another person may come in and inadvertenetly cross wire a connection, the only thing that matters is that you are consistent at all points with one wiring scheme. If someone else may have to work on the system it is generous to mark your wiring scheme at all connecting points. If you are uncertain of the configuration, this will also help you when you have to work on the wiring.
