Still looking into some budget CD-players and was wondering what the experience has been with the Cambridge Azur 640 or 540. Have also been considering the NAD C542.

All are excellent value for money.

There are some concersn over transformer hum on the 640c (see threads in this forum) and I personally had problems with tracking and alignement on two 640c's. I eventually swapped it for a 542 and it does sound marginally better to my ears, plus it plays HDCD which is a bonus.
