I'm ready to purchase a JBL 5.1 speaker package using E90 towers, EC35 center, E10 rear surrounds, and E250P sub. I'm also considering buying a 7.1 receiver for future expansion. The question is: Can any 7.1 receiver be set to properly decode in 6.1 and 5.1 modes also?
I was considering the Onkyo SR-702, but I've not been reading good things about their products!
Any suggestions for a receiver in the $600 range?

Yes...a 7.1 system can be configured for 5.1.
For that range, check out HK and Marantz. I think you can also get the Pioneer Elite 54tx for that price, you just have to look.
