I have a Pioneer home stero 5.1 suround I was wondering can you buy external amps or do I need to buy main unit with more watts? Really not up to speed on home stereos.

A 5.1 surround system should be ready to go. Just hook up the speakers and enjoy. Now, if you want to power a few other rooms, and have a multi source capability, then yes, you'll need another amp.
