when i hooked up my stereo receiver to my tv only one of the speakers had sound the other one just made a loud buzzing.

Sounds like a bad connection. Did you try reversing the wiring connections from the TV to the receiver to try to track the source of the problem? Also do you have the TV menu for audio set to stereo or surround output?
