It's my understanding the MR78 is considered a classic tuner. Assuming it is "better" than the MR74, what makes it so? Would the MR74 be considered a good tuner or is it something to avoid?

The MR78 was a later model of the series, so it is sometimes more desired. It is all solid state, as is the MR74. The MR71 is considered the "best-sounding" of the series, being the last to use tubes.
