I have heard that these are the same receiver. Is this true are there any differences? Why does the 985 cost less?

You can download the owner's manual which I did as I am considering this receiver and it is titled "AVR2805 / 985". You might want to look through the manual to see if it identifies any features unique to one model. Also, sometimes manufacturers give different numbers to the same product to protect price matching competition from different distribution channels.
