I just bought a pioneer D514 5.1ch. Is this a bright reciever? What brand/type of speakers work well with it? Consider all brands, I'm looking for something lower in price, thanks.

I have not heard the specific model of Pioneer you bought but let me share this experience. I demo'd the Pioneer 914k with my Wharfedale Diamond 8.3 fronts, Diamond center, and Diamond 8.1 surrounds. I must say that I was quite impressed with the "lower budget" receiver. It sounded neutral to slightly warm with crisp mids and highs. To me it was a great match with the speakers I have, and by the way if you are looking for inexpensive speakers then Wharfedale is an excellent choice. If you are able to get acopy of What Hi-Fi Magazine's October issue you will see a stellar review on these speaker. They consistantly receive high praise and I paid $550 for all five speakers. In case you are interested you can find these speakers at wildwestelectronics.com or on ebay which is where I purchased mine.

Vols, I looked at some reviews for the Diamond 8.3 in particular and there were some bad reviews. They said it sounded boxy and muffled? The poineer I got I know is not the best but I was on a buget and got it at cost from Circuit City. Also I read that unless your going to spend alot of money for lets say front speakers, bookshelf is the way to go versus tower speakers, what do you think? is there anywhere in the US that sells wharfedale so I can hear them? MY reciever is close to the 914 expect it has 5.1 channels and 100watt RMS whereas the 914 has 6.1 110RMS. I really wanted to get the HK 130ARV. WHen I do upgrade to a new reciever a few years down the road what do you think is the best for about $400-500 HK, Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon, etc. Those type of brands, you know popular but on the higher end. Thanks

What reviews are you mentioning? I read both consumer reviews and more importantly reviews in What Hi-Fi Magazine. I realize sound is subjective to the listener, but for the price I don't think you could find better. To your question about floorstanders vs. bookshelf I would agree but I don't know how "lower in price" you wish to be.

I was simply telling extending my thoughts on the question of a inexpensive set up to compliment the Pioneer.

I also think the H/K would work very well with these speakers.

I can't comment on what will be a good receiver in a couple of years, you would have to wait and see what's available at that time.

I don't know of a dealer you can listen to them in, that was the only reservation I had when I purchased them. I am quite happy that I bit the bullet.

Ok I did see those other sites that the diamonds got good reviews, i cant remember where the other site was but two people gave the 8.3 a 2/10. As far as speakers are concerned how does Athena or Axiom compare with wharfedale. Are those good speakers. Seems like Athena is a fairly good speaker for the price ans Axiom though rated good doesnt sell much outside of the company website. I'm looking for some front speakers in the 150-400 a pair.

Athena are decent inexpensive speakers, I tried them out prior to purchasing the Wharfedales. To me they sounded a bit flat in the mid range and boomy in bass. The Wharfedales have much tighter base and mid range is where they shine in my opinion. I have heard a lot of good things about Axiom but I have no experience with them. The price of the forthcoming new Wharfedale Diamond 9.1s are estimated at 180 British pounds but I would imagine you could pick them up within your price range when they hit stores.

Check out Sound and Vision this month's issue as well as What Hi-Fi magazine October issue, they both have buyer's guide sections for the range you are looking at.
